Blood Group Diets – Peter D’Adamo

Peter D’Adamo asserts that lectins found mostly in common salad ingredients, fresh fruits, roasted nuts and processed cereals which depend on blood type. However, lectins react with all blood types. 1

Lectins are found in significant amounts in raw legumes. A minimal amount of time cooking destroys these lectins.

D’Adamo does not supply any research, either his own or others to support any of his statments.

A 2014 paper concluded, 2

Adherence to the Type-A diet was associated with lower BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure, serum cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, HOMA-IR and HOMA-Beta. Adherence to the Type-AB diet was also associated with lower levels of these biomarkers except for BMI and waist circumference.

Adherence to the Type-O diet was associated with lower triglycerides. Matching the ‘Blood-Type’ diets with the corresponding blood group did not change the effect size of any of these associations. No significant association was found for the Type-B diet.

Adherence to certain ‘Blood-Type‘ diets is associated with favorable effects on some cardiometabolic risk factors, but these associations were independent of an individual’s ABO genotype, so the findings do not support the ‘Blood-Type’ diet hypothesis.

Blood type A diet is a vegan diet because, according to D’Adamo, ‘it [is] difficult for Type As to digest and metabolize animal protein and fat’.

D’Adamo claims that blood type O is the oldest of the blood groups because it is the simplest. According to D’Adamo:

Blood type O has a very well-developed ability to digest meals that contain both protein and fat. Simple carbohydrates, especially from grains, are more easily converted into fats and triglycerides.

Blood type A can be traced to the struggle for survival long ago, when there was a rapidly dwindling supply of hunting game stock. Having exhausted the great game herds of Africa, humans pushed farther out from their ancestral home into Europe and Asia.

Low levels of hydrochloric acid in the stomach and high intestinal disaccharide digestive enzyme levels permit the more efficient digestion of carbohydrates. These are also the very factors, along with low levels of intestinal alkaline phosphatase, that make it difficult for Type As to digest and metabolize animal protein and fat.

Blood Type B developed in the area of the Himalayan highlands, now part of present day Pakistan and India, pushed from the hot, lush savannahs of eastern Africa to the cold highlands of the Himalayan Mountains.

Blood type B first appeared in India or the Ural region of Asia among a mix of Caucasian and Mongolian tribes. This was characteristic of the great tribes of steppe dwellers. They swept northward, pursuing a culture dependent upon herding and domesticating animals – as their diet of meat and cultured dairy products reflected.

Blood Type AB is rare. It is the “newest” of the blood types. Until ten or twelve centuries ago, there was little to no Type AB blood type. Type AB is sometimes A-like, sometimes B-like and sometimes a fusion of both.

The A, B and O versions of the gene differ only slightly.

We show that instead the remarkable distribution of ABO alleles reflects the persistence of an old ancestral polymormorphism that originated at least 20 million years ago and is shared identical from descent by humans and gibbons as well as among distantly related Old World Monkeys. The O type cropped up later – still long before chimpanzees and humans diverged.


The GenoType Diet is a further enhancement of D’Aadamo’s Blood Group diet to classify individuals are one of six basic Epigenotypes: Hunter, Gatherer, Teacher, Explorer, Warrior, Nomad.

  • Hunter: Tall, thin, and intense, with an overabundance of adrenaline and a fierce, nervous energy that winds down with age, the Hunter was originally the success story of the human species. Vulnerable to systemic burnout when overstressed, the Hunter’s modern challenge is to conserve energy for the long haul.
  • Gatherer: Gatherers carried humanity on their backs during times of famine and scarcity. They are Nature’s ultimate survival strategy. Vulnerable to conserving calories as stored fat, the Gatherers’ modern challenge is to their survival programming to the realities of today’s overabundance of fats and sugar.
  • Teacher: The Teacher carries an impressive wisdom of the body. Long ago, Teacher GenoTypes incorporated rich and abundant sources of protein in combination with rapid adoption of simple but effective agricultural technologies, and went on to develop a reasonably flexible worldview.
  • Explorer: When you hear about someone who has taught their English bulldog to skateboard, it’s almost always an Explorer GenoType. Many of the nutrigenomic profiles available today test for polymorphisms in certain genes that have been linked to disturbances in body function and which may be amenable to diet and lifestyle changes.
  • Warrior: One common tendency of the Warrior is what we might call the ‘unibrow’ or what geneticists call “concurrency”. This makes a rather handy distinction between the Nomad and Warrior which can be of some use to blood type AB individuals: The tendency of the two eyebrows to blend over the nose is found more often in type AB Warriors than in AB Nomads. Warrior can be a quite sanguine personality, someone who is generally optimistic, rational, and analytical.
  • Nomad: A common sign of Nomad asymmetrically is a difference in the size of the breasts in women and the testicles in men. Almost all taller Nomads tend to be symmetrical –a sure sign that they enjoyed life in the womb!
